Choosing a Travel Backpack

Before we begin, let me preface this post with the disclaimer that I am not being paid to promote any of the products mentioned. Anything I show you is due to my own research.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, it’s time to talk about travel backpacks! Specifically, carry-on travel backpacks. There are many different sizes out there as possibilities, however, some travelers prefer to keep their luggage with them at all times. That is where the carry-on size comes in handy.

According to United Airlines’ website, “The maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm), including handles and wheels.” When choosing the right backpack for you, it’s important to keep these dimensions in mind, especially as you’re tempted to fill your luggage to its maximum capacity. Be aware that American aircraft cabins are often larger than those in other countries, which means carry-on compartment space can be limited. To play it safe, make sure that when fully packed, your backpack still fits within these size dimensions.

Aware that space is limited, some companies created stow-away straps for their backpacks. On these models, the shoulder straps can be zipped up inside and out of the way for your carrying and stowing convenience. An example of this can be seen here as evidenced by Osprey’s Farpoint 70 travel backpack. This feature can be helpful when putting up and taking down your backpack from the carry-on compartments, as well as when attempting to fit your luggage into a tight space.

Another feature to keep in mind when choosing a backpack, is its sturdiness. Not all brands are created equal. If you plan to use your travel backpack often, then it would be wise to pick one with tear-resistant fabric, steel framing, or even reinforced shoulder straps. Examples of these include the Nomatic 40L Travel Bag with durable fabric and reinforced straps, and the North Face Shadow 30+10 Hiking Pack with a spring steel frame.

Finally, when deciding which travel backpack is right for you, think about where you’re headed. Is pickpocketing an issue? If so, then you should consider choosing a theft-resistant backpack. Possible options can include thicker fabric, built-in steel cables to deflect knives, hidden zippers, and even zipper locks. If you choose to utilize a luggage lock, be sure that the one you select is TSA-approved. That way, if TSA decides to open up your luggage, your lock will not be damaged in the process. Here is an example.

A carry-on travel backpack is convenient due to its size and the ability for a traveler to keep it with them at all times, while also providing security for one’s belongings. Choosing the pack that is right for you hinges on many factors. Your backpack will be providing you peace of mind while you travel, so be sure to pick one that can go the distance!
